Enhancing your local environment is a great way to start thinking big about the impact of neighbours on your surrounding neighbourhood. Becs of Auckland is a botanist and has a wealth of knowledge on everything plant related.
She decided to have her neighbours over to share her knowledge of local weeds with them, over wine… Weeds and Wine has turned into an activity which has activated her neighbours into local advocates for biodiversity. They have eco-walking tours of their local neighbourhood to identify weeds and native birds.
Other activities have also happened and they have regular get togethers including a “mid winter xmas” at the local community hall with mulled wine, a “harvest celebration” at a community garden and a summer/xmas party.
They now have support of their local board to put together local activities and hire the hall which are seeing between 25 and 70 people attend each time. The regularity of events and common purpose created through caring for the local environment are deepening the sense of community in their neighbourhood.
